Common Illnesses That Kids Get
6. Jaundice
You may have heard of jaundice in people with liver problems, like alcoholics or gallstones, but it can also occur in little kids. It’s actually fairly common. This is when your child appears to have a yellow tint in their skin. The reason for this is that they have a buildup of bilirubin, a chemical created by the liver since it doesn’t know how to properly remove this from the bloodstream. When it builds up in the blood, it can change the color of a baby’s skin. It is not a problem unless too much bilirubin has built up in the body. A doctor should be contacted to do the tests and see how high the bilirubin level is. Sometimes the doctor will prescribe a special UV light that will help get rid of the problem. It’s pretty cool actually.
